Sedona Artist: Carol Hildebrand

My interest in art started early in my childhood. I began drawing at age five and have been drawing consistently since. Although I have a lot of experience in watercolor and oil painting, I feel that the drawing aspect of a work is the most fundamental, therefore the most important. I love to compose first in graphite, and if desired, another study in color comes naturally.

I studied art and art history at Penn State in the early eighties. After a move to the Seattle area, I studied at the Seattle Academy of Fine Art, where I began, and continue to, study portrait art under the instruction of Anthony Ryder of Sante Fe, New Mexico. As a result of his superb artistic and teaching skills, I became interested in teaching art.

Prior to moving to Verde Valley in 2002, I taught art in Seattle area schools. The children have a natural inclination to draw and express themselves through their own art. Mural art is a unique way to work towards a team experience for all ages, the resulting pride in community more than worth the effort. I find the same fulfillment in my adult students as they have the desire to reconnect themselves to what they also loved to do as children.

I have traveled to Italy several times and had the opportunity to teach some Italian children drawing. There was no language barrier as art has its own communication. The reward was seeing these young students show off their artwork to their parents.

I have lived in Mexico as well and attended the art school of San Miguel de Allende for 6 months, drawing and painting using live models. I continue to attend several workshops to this day with the thought of improving my own work.
